Resumen

Entre 1972 y 1980, Israel y el Uruguay autoritario desarrollaron una alianza política basada en percepciones compartidas como bastiones que luchaban contra el terrorismo y las aproximaciones de la expansión comunista en los márgenes de Occidente. Mientras Uruguay fue el régimen sudamericano más consecuentemente opuesto a la OLP, Israel ayudó a la dictadura uruguaya a manipular la opinión pública y cubrir el antisemitismo en sus aparatos represivos. Al tratar con los efectos de la represión uruguaya sobre judíos izquierdistas, acorde con su compromiso de solidaridad judía, los diplomáticos israelíes tendían a priorizar su alianza con el régimen.

Between 1972 and 1980, Israel and authoritarian Uruguay developed a political alliance based on shared perceptions as bastions fighting terrorism and the proxies of communist expansion at the Western margins. While Uruguay remained the most consequential anti-PLO South American regime, Israel helped the Uruguayan dictatorship manipulate public opinion and cover up antisemitism within its repressive apparatus. While dealing with the effects of Uruguayan repression of leftist Jews according to their commitment to Jewish solidarity, Israeli diplomats tended to prioritize their alliance with the regime.
